Siltech Limited launches IR-colouring ink, Silmark

Posted: 04/02/2010

Silmark is a printing system that uses the light beam from a CO2 laser to “write” into the special IR-sensitive ink. The ink will change colour permanently from white to black after exposure to the 10000nm wavelength of the beam. It will do this so rapidly that alpha-numerics can be printed at over 1300 characters per second to produce good quality, stable, machine-readable codes and marks.

The added cost to the printing of a package is very low which leads to considerable overall cost savings compared with other coding technologies. Added to this is the fact that lasers are totally reliable and require virtually no service or maintenance. The use of Silmark means that packing lines do not require to have any contact with inks or solvents: no need for a technician and no chance of taint. Siltech claims that Silmark is better quality, cheaper, and greener than other coding systems. Furthermore, Silmark can be used to code through wrapping film (if you can see through the film, then the laser beam will go through it!), and it can code in damp conditions.

Siltech Limited offers an assessment service whereby possible savings following adoption of Silmark will be calculated.
